EU’s IUU regulation

The EU’s new regulation to combat Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing (IUU) came into force on 1 January 2010, creating a "paper tsunami" for the seafood industry. Wild caught seafood products are prohibited from entering the EU, unless accompanied by valid catch certificates. The certificates are based on a chain of custody and documentation that leads all the way back to the original fishing vessels.

Documentation must be shared, signed and transferred along the supply chain, despite the mixing, splitting and transformation of raw ingredients. When months pass between the original catch and the final export to the EU, it can be difficult to track down the needed product details. Re-exportation and inconsistent catch certificate formats create additional headaches for EU importers and control authorities.
